James Alex Hughes, age 62, of Dillsboro, passed away very unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, December 9, 2012 at
Dearborn County Hospital. He was born July 15, 1950 in Milan to James H. “Trig” Hughes and Mary (Smith) Hughes.
Jim graduated from Dillsboro High School with the class of 1968, and attended ISU, graduating with a Bachelor’s
Degree in education. He then entered the Master’s program at Indiana University in Bloomington, earning a
Master’s Degree in education. He taught at Manchester, IN grade school and Dillsboro grade school. Jim was the
Jr. High Basketball Coach at Dillsboro, as well as the Vice Principal. He was then transferred to South
Dearborn Middle School, where he taught Math. Jim also taught drivers education at South Dearborn. Altogether
Jim taught for over 30 years. In 2001 he was married to Linda Begley. He enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, and
loved to cook. For the past 2 years, beginning in 2010, Jim was a Dearborn County Councilman. He was also a
member of Sons of American Legion, Post 292, Bear Creek Baptist Church, and the Aurora Eagles, Post 2022. Jim
was preceded in death by his father, James H. “Trig” Hughes. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda; one
son, James Edward Hughes, and his wife, JoAnna, of Dillsboro; one daughter, Katherine Marie Hughes, of
Elkhart, IN; two grandchildren; James Joseph Hughes and Noah Alexander Diaz De Leon; one step daughter, Hannah
Schleicher, of Sunman; three brothers, David (Letha) Hughes, of Dillsboro, Timothy (Donna) Hughes, of
California, and Jeff (Jennifer) Hughes, of Hidden Valley; James and Katherine Hughes mother, Carol Hughes, of
Dillsboro; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; many, many friends. Friends may meet his
family on Friday, December 14, 2012 at Dillsboro Public School from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral
service will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Dillsboro Public School. Pastor Tom Holt
will be officiating, and the interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro. The family suggests
memorials be made to the James Alex Hughes Technical Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are entrusted to DeVries
Funeral Home in Dillsboro.
